Research Projects

Ontotext participates in numerous research projects focusing on semantics, text analysis and information discovery. Since our founding within Sirma Group over 14 years ago, Ontotext has participated in more than 30 research projects and related initiatives. Our most recent activities are listed below.

PHEME – Computing Veracity Across Media, Languages, and Social Networks

A good reputation is hard-won and easily lost. Every other day we see how information and news affect every level of our society: Company stocks, sovereign debt, politicians. This fact is especially true in the Internet era where rumours go viral. The new research project Pheme, co-funded by the European Union’s ICT FP7 programme, aims to compute veracity of rumours across media, languages, and social networks.

MULTISENSOR is an EU funded research project, which aims at advancing the research and development of multilingual media analysis technologies.

    Project Objectives

The goal is to enable users (e.g. journalists, entrepreneurs) to attain a comprehensive and exact understanding of topics they are engaged in, not only from their own but from multiple viewpoints.

MULTISENSOR stands for Mining and Understanding of multilinguaL contenT for Intelligent Sentiment Enriched coNtext and Social Oriented inteRpretation

Scanning multiple heterogeneous sources MULTISENSOR will help gather and semantically integrate various local subjective and biased views disseminated via TV, radio, mass media websites and social media.

Using sentiment, social and spatiotemporal methods MULTISENSOR will then help to interpret, relate and summarize economic information and news items.

Ontotext’s role includes Semantic Reasoning and Decision Support, and data engineering for Linguistic Linked Data.  More specifically, our tasks include:

    • To provide the infrastructure which will serve as the storage layer for the (meta)data of the MULTISENSOR platform
    • To develop reasoning techniques beyond state of the art allowing for efficient information selection from heterogeneous data pools, e.g. hybrid reasoning, multi-threaded reasoning, temporal reasoning, geo-spatial reasoning
    • To produce a decision support mechanism based on the developed reasoning techniques, listed above, and on cognitive techniques for context aware graph navigation, such as spreading activation.
    • Knowledge modelling to identify and select the most appropriate ontologies that can fulfil the demand for unambiguous communication and information sharing relevant to MULTISENSOR and driven by the use cases, and extend with appropriate ontologies

  • DaPaaS

    Dates: November 1, 2013 - October 31, 2015

DaPaaS: Data and Platform as-a-Service – Data publishing through the cloud

While in recent years a large number of datasets has been published as open (and often linked) data, applications utilizing these open and distributed data have been rather few. Reasons include, amongst others, the technical complexity and cost of publishing and providing access to the data, lack of monetization incentives on the provider side, and lack of simplified and unified solutions for data consumption in a multi-platform way.
